Craft Group for Parents

Tina Tribe

A very talented!) mum at school. Leading the Craft Group for Parents.

We have an industrious craft group for parents at Cambridge Steiner School, that runs on a Wednesday morning from drop-off until 11:00 am.

Parents of all skill levels are welcome to come along and meet other parents, socialise and of course, make beautiful things.

Parents of pre-school children are welcome to bring their little ones along.

Some parents attend regularly and some come when they can - it's completely flexible.

This term the craft group is overseeing a project to celebrate 100 years of Waldorf education, as part of a worldwide celebration of 'Waldorf 100'.
The project is a wall-hanging on the theme of 'Bees and Trees'. It will depict a tree in all stages of the four seasons, surrounded by animals and little children.
As bees work together in a hive, the school is working together to make things for the hanging. So far children from various lower school classes have sewn animals, wet felted leaves, wet felted bees, created little people and woven the bark for the tree. This term, kindergarten children will be making blossoms for the hanging.

Parents are learning to crochet little snowflakes for the hanging. Crocheting is a craft that the children learn in school but one that not all parents can do. The craft group is a good place to come and learn some of these handwork skills. In the future we may include basic knitting, weaving and sewing skills.

We plan to have the hanging finished for the Mayfair, and ready for exhibition in the triennial exhibition run by The Cambridgeshire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, members of which generously loaned weaving looms for children to help create this project. This exhibition will be held at Grantchester village hall on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May.
